Arlington Community Electricity (ACE) is a carefully designed program offered by the Town of Arlington to provide new electricity supply options and more renewable energy to Arlington residents and businesses. The Program is a Town-vetted alternative to Eversource’s default supply and other third-party electricity suppliers. Arlington Community Electricity is the only electricity program offered by the Town – beware of look-alike offers and always look for the Town seal on materials sent to you!

Arlington Community Electricity’s (ACE) revised aggregation plan will help low-income residents save on electricity costs and align with a new state template. Public review open through Jan 7, 2026. You can read the updated plan here or at the Town Hall, and provide comments through the contact form here.

The ACE Program cannot guarantee savings compared to Eversource Basic Service for the duration of the Program pricing because future Basic Service rates are unknown.

The products labeled “Green” contain additional Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) above that required by MA law. The additional RECs qualify for MA Class I designation from generation located within, or delivered to, New England. RECs are the accepted legal instrument used to track renewable energy generation and to substantiate claims of renewable energy use.

Please note: Customers that opt-out of the program and then seek to re-join, as well as new medium, large and very large business customers joining the program, may be offered a market price, rather than the program price shown in the table above. Such market price will be offered by the electricity supplier in writing, and you will not be enrolled in that price unless you affirmatively accept. The market price will be based on current  wholesale prices and the supplier’s costs at the time the you seek to enroll, and the price will be fixed for the remainder of the Town’s contract with the supplier. At the start of the Town’s next supply contract, you will be transferred to the then-current program pricing.

A Major Milestone for Arlington: 100% Renewable Default

Under the current contract, the renewable energy percentage for Arlington’s default, Local Green product totals 100%. Arlington is the first community in the state to offer a 100% renewable energy product as the default option in its community electricity program. Reaching 100% renewable energy in the ACE default product is a priority in the Town’s Net Zero Action PlanLearn more here.

Goals of Arlington Community Electricity

Competitive, Stable Price

Arlington Community Electricity seeks to provide long-term, advantageous and predictable rates for electricity that exceeds the Massachusetts renewable energy requirements. Savings compared to Eversource’s Basic Service rates cannot be guaranteed because future Eversource rates are unknown.

Support Renewable Energy Sources

Arlington Community Electricity’s standard product and optional products include more renewable energy than required by the Commonwealth. This means you can support the growth of renewable energy generation in our region. Learn more about our renewable energy options.

Increased Choice and Easy Participation

The Program offers four different options for electricity supply so that everyone in Arlington can find an option that fits their budget and climate goals.

Participants in ACE may leave the Program at any time without penalty.

How it works

ACE does not replace Eversource as your electric utility. Eversource continues to deliver electricity, repair outages and manage all billing.  The ACE Program offers alternatives for the Supply portion of your bill. The Delivery portion of your bill is not impacted by the Program. See the Understanding Your Bill section to see the difference between Supply and Delivery sections.

The Program is open to electricity customers in Arlington – whether they are a resident, a business, a renter or an owner.

The Program has voluntary participation and automatic enrollment.

  • Voluntary participation: customers can leave the Program at any time without penalty.
  • Automatic enrollment for new customers: In Arlington, most residential and business customers are already enrolled in the Program. New customers or newly eligible customers will periodically be sent a Customer Notification Letter notifying them of their choice to participate in the Program or leave before it starts (opt out). Customers have 30 days to make a choice and those who do not opt out are automatically enrolled in the Program. To enroll sooner, use our online forms.
  • Opt-in required for some: Those Arlington residents and businesses who have already chosen an electricity supplier other than Eversource will not receive the Customer Notification Letter, though they can voluntarily opt in to the Program at any time. The Department of Public Utilities advises all customers of third party suppliers to check their contract terms as their supplier may charge them a fee or a penalty to leave before the end of their contract with their supplier.

Solar electricity consumers will not be impacted and will continue to receive all net metering credits while participating in the Program.

Budget Billing and Low Income Delivery Rate customers will continue to receive those benefits while participating in the Program.

Understanding Your Bill

Your electric bill has two main parts:

  • Supply Charges – the cost of the electricity itself.
  • Delivery Charges – the cost to bring electricity to your home. These rates are the same for all residential customers in your area.

On average, supply makes up about half of your total bill, and delivery makes up the other half. The ACE Program impacts supply costs only, as delivery rates are set by the utility and stay the same regardless of your supplier. For more details on how delivery rates are set, visit this website.
